Nemo in slumberland comic6/20/2023 Here, for the first time, is a 3D homage to a character who unquestionably represents the “birth” of the comic as we understand it today. And once again, Infinite Statue has created the first significant tribute to the man who actually invented the art of the Comic. He is, to all intents and purposes, considered the “father” of the art of the Comic Strip or Sequential Art par excellence: Winsor McCay, with his character of Nemo, paved the way for all the cartoonists who came in later years. Little Nemo debuted on the New York Herald on October 15, 1905, his drawings have influenced several generations of cartoonists in later years, of fact Little Nemo is still considered an example of sequential art for anyone who wants to engage in the comics world. Harvery has called Winsor McCay "the first original genius of the comic strip medium" and his masterpiece “Little Nemo in Slumberland” it can be considered the first and most important character in the world of comics.

Srnicek platform capitalism6/20/2023 Emancipatory initiatives should reinvent the concept of ‘autonomy’ to emphasize ways out of platform capitalism. Their findings were, however, on the basis of observations from 1960s factory struggles, not from today’s digital platform labour. During the 1960s and 1970s, workerists like Tronti and Negri argued that workers can spontaneously organize resistance against capital and thereby lead the way towards an autonomous future. This chapter confronts this situation of digital governmentality with the workerist notion of autonomy to assess what autonomy can mean in the age of platform capitalism. These apps extract data from their workers in order to subsequently control their conduct. Digital companies like Uber, Deliveroo, and TaskRabbit develop apps that workers download to acquire work. The rise of digital technology and the politics of lockdown have pushed Western economies towards what Nick Srnicek calls ‘platform capitalism’. The bone witch trilogy6/20/2023 In the land of Eight Kingdoms, there are two rules of magic that, if you know them up front, will make the series easier to delve into. Understanding The Bone WitchĪnd so, I do you a service because you all need to read these books. You’ll have to wait for the grand finale for that.īut damn, it’s so worth it. And I’ll tell you upfront: Reading The Bone Witch is, at minimum, a two-book commitment-since the storylines don’t converge in the first book, nor the sequel. The novel’s structure demands time and patience, as it flips between short italicized chapters in the present, and longer, more narrative chapters set in the past before the storylines converge. The worldbuilding-freshly un-Eurocentric and inspired by the mythologies of the Middle East and Asia-was, at first, confusing. I had tried reading this YA fantasy before and stopped a few times before filing it away and ultimately restarting. I’m going to confess: I picked up Rin Chupeco’s The Bone Witch with some trepidation. The Christie Affair by Nina de Gramont6/19/2023 It's 1926, the year Christie actually did disappear for more than a week after husband Archie left her for his secretary, Nancy Neele (de Gramont uses real names but changed Neele's).Ĭhristie never explained her disappearance, which has inspired many speculative accounts, including the film "Agatha." Eventually, we discover that de Gramont has concocted an intriguing if implausible theory, but it's a struggle getting there because Christie, the lone sympathetic person in the story, is only a minor character and because O'Dea is such a confusing narrator.ĭe Gramont spends far too much time on O'Dea's repetitive back story, invents a murder mystery but gives us no clues to solve it, muddles the timeline and, worst of all, has O'Dea describing events for which she could not have been present and diving into the thought processes of people she doesn't even know. Nina de Gramont's narrator is secretary Nan O'Dea, who is having an affair with her boss, the husband of mystery writer Agatha Christie. Nina de Gramonts latest novel, The Christie Affair, is a New York Times and international bestseller, and the Reese’s Book Club pick for February, 2022. Nina is also the author of a collection of short stories, Of Cats and Men, as well as the novels Gossip of the Starlings and The Last September. It boasts many lyrical sentences, particularly in the final chapter, but "The Christie Affair" feels like it was abandoned in the middle of the editing process. Nina de Gramonts The Christie Affair is a stunning novel which reimagines the unexplained eleven-day disappearance of Agatha Christie that captivated the. Nina de Gramont's latest novel, The Christie Affair, is an international and New York Times best seller, and the Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick for February, 2022. Misfits and outcasts often feature prominently in her novels, short stories, poems, and more. Shapland, who at the time was working as an intern in the archives of the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas, Austin, knew that McCullers was, in a way, a representative of the “other” in society. The two women had been friends - that was no secret - and yet the letters suggested an intimacy that went beyond anything platonic. Jenn Shapland knew she had stumbled upon something remarkable when she discovered letters between writer Carson McCullers and photographer and journalist Annemarie Schwarzenbach. Neanderthal Marries Human by Penny Reid6/19/2023 If it were up to Quinn, he would efficiently propose, marry, and beget Janie with child all in the same day-thereby avoiding the drama and angst that accompanies the four stages of pre-matrimony: engagement, meeting the parents, bachelor/bachelorette party, and overblown, superfluous wedding day traditions. It is the sequel to 'Neanderthal Seeks Human,' it is book #1.5 in the 'Knitting in the City' series, and it is a full length, 105k word novel.**There are three things you should know about Quinn Sullivan: 1) He is madly in love with Janie Morris, 2) He's not above playing dirty to get what (or who) he wants, and 3) He doesn't know how to knit. After just five months of dating Janie, Quinn-former Wendell and unapologetic autocrat-is ready to propose marriage. Heartwood hotel book 1 a true home6/19/2023 The second book, The Greatest Gift, picks up this storyline where it left off in A True Home. Mona has to use all her wits to save her new home. But it isn’t easy going, not when her fellow maid Tilly the Squirrel keeps trying to get her fired, and definitely not when the whole hotel is threatened by a pack of hungry wolves. She’s offered a job as a maid and eagerly tries to prove her worth to Mr. She stumbles upon a huge tree and discovers it’s the famous Heartwood Hotel, a stopping place for animals from all over Fernwood. In the first instalment, A True Home, Mona the mouse is alone and lost in a terrible storm. George aims her Heartwood Hotel series at a slightly more advanced readership, but maintains her commitment to telling tales that feel like a gentle hug. Her Magical Animal Adoption Agency series for beginning readers is full of the kind of subtle quirkiness and mythical animals kids love. If there’s one thing Vancouver author Kallie George knows, it’s how to craft a tale full of whimsy.
